Castor-based Thixotropes or castor derivatives are designed for use in solvent borne coatings, caulks and sealants and compared to organoclays, castor-based thixotropes are significantly more thixotropic. This type of rheology presents several advantages, mainly in application properties, which consist of providing a “buttery” feel during brushing, a good balance between sag and leveling along with excellent pigment suspension. These thixotropes also provide a good balance between sag and leveling and usually are more effective in pigment suspension when compared to organoclay gellants. These products do require several important processing considerations which involve the dispersion, heating and cool down stage of the formulation.
